Factories of Death details the activities of the Japanese army scientists that conducted numerous horrifying experiments upon live human beings. It investigates who from the upper echelons of the Japanese military and political establishments knew of the experiments, also the question of whether or not Allied POWs were subjected to such tests, and the nature of the deal that was brokered with US authorities after the war. Where's the ME in Museum : Going to Museums with Children download book This new edition has been completely updated, and contains an entirely new chapter detailing the numerous revelations that have surfaced since the book's initial publication in 1994. More than just a single-minded warrior-king, Henry V comes to life in this fresh account as a gifted ruler acutely conscious of spiritual matters and his subjects' welfare Shakespeare's centuries-old portrayal of Henry V established the king's reputation as a warmongering monarch, a perception that has persisted ever since. But in this exciting, thoroughly researched volume a different view of Henry emerges: a multidimensional ruler of great piety, a hands-on governor who introduced a radically new conception of England's European role in secular and ecclesiastical affairs, a composer of music, an art patron, and a dutiful king who fully appreciated his obligations toward those he ruled. Historian Malcolm Vale draws on extensive primary archival evidence that includes many documents annotated or endorsed in Henry's own hand. Focusing on a series of themes-the interaction between king and church, the rise of the English language as a medium of government and politics, the role of ceremony in Henry's kingship, and more-Vale revises understandings of Henry V and his conduct of the everyday affairs of England, Normandy, and the kingdom of France.

Marcia Bartusiak: The Day We Found the Universe

The Day We Found the Universe

Description

The riveting and mesmerizing story behind a watershed period in human history, the discovery of the startling size and true nature of our universe. On New Years Day in 1925, a young Edwin Hubble released his finding that our Universe was far bigger, eventually measured as a thousand trillion times larger than previously believed. Hubble's proclamation sent shock waves through the scientific community. Six years later, in a series of meetings at Mount Wilson Observatory, Hubble and others convinced Albert Einstein that the Universe was not static but in fact expanding. Here Marcia Bartusiak reveals the key players, battles of will, clever insights, incredible technology, ground-breaking research, and wrong turns made by the early investigators of the heavens as they raced to uncover what many consider one of most significant discoveries in scientific history.

'When I was a little girl I believed what I was told over and over again: that I was evil, that I deserved to be tortured because I was the Devil's child ...' In April 2007 foster-mother Eunice Spry was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for her sadistic abuse of the children in The Day We Found the Universe download ebook her care. The details of her cruelty were so sickening they shocked the country. Alloma Gilbert was one of Spry's young victims, sent to live with her at the age of six and left at her mercy for eleven brutal years. Eunice used her own twisted religious beliefs as an excuse for punishing her foster children. When she took them to live on an isolated farmhouse, the abuse escalated to terrifying levels - a stick was thrust down Alloma's throat so often it was stained red with blood, she was starved for over a year and survived only by secretly eating pigswill, and the vicious beatings were relentless. At the age of seventeen she finally escaped but, alone in the outside world, she fell prey to abusive men. It was the birth of her baby daughter that saved her, that finally taught her what love really is. Written with powerful honesty, Deliver Me From Evil is a moving and inspiring story of survival.

The Convey Excel Series : Verbs -- Vol. 1 (A-H) 1

Description

THE CONVEY EXCEL SERIES Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 English is one of the most difficult languages to learn, but is the most demanded in the global environment in which we live. It is the goal of Convey Education to create the most comprehensive and accurate learning tools to teach English to South Korean speakers. Our books are relevant for use among elementary school to college level courses, and the private and professional market. Convey Education was founded on the need for an accurate, comprehensive and user friendly book series focused on teaching English to South Koreans. The main focus of The Convey Excel Series Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 is on the correct pronunciation of words, which is commonly the most difficult part of learning the English language for South Koreans. The major contributing author, Mrs.Younchong Wojciechowski MSAJS, specializes in translation, and has over thirty years of experience as a private tutor. Its this experience and a profound understanding of both the South Korean and English languages that has allowed the author to design a method that successfully teaches English. The book offers the depth of a dictionary with the instructional application of a textbook. One of the key features of Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 is the use of Hangul, South Korea's phonetic alphabet, to pronounce the English words. This allows the users to correctly reproduce the correct sounds of the English language without expensive computer programs or having a costly tutor present. Unlike other books that utilize this technique, the writers of The Convey Excel Series meticulously recreated the sounds of English words with great attention to detail. Another key feature of Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 is the use of multiple English and Korean definitions and sample sentences. This allows the reader to get a full picture and a complete understanding of the word defined. In choosing the English definitions the authors used only the most commonly used and understood meanings. To further the understanding of the English language, Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 include Korean definitions of words used within the original English definitions and sample sentences. The reader is presented with easy reference to words that might not be understood, without having to look them up. The Convey Excel Series was designed to be more than reference dictionaries. Most translation dictionaries are written in small text and are difficult to read and use as a study tool. Our manuscript is written in larger text and an easy to read and understand layout. Learning American English for Koreans: Verbs Volume 1 and 2 contain over 4,000 of the most popular and widely used verbs of the English language and total about 1,000 pages long. The complete Convey Excel Series will cover all eight parts of speech (verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, conjunction, interjections and prepositions). Each book of the series increases the ability of the user to understand and apply English. For more information visit: conveyeducation.com

Kenneth O. Morgan: Michael Foot: A Life

Michael Foot: A Life

Description

The authorised - but not uncritical - life of one of the great parliamentarians and orators of our times, the former Labour Party leader, now in his nineties, who is also an eminent man of letters. Michael Foot has been a controversial and charismatic figure in British public life, political and literary, for over sixty years. Emerging from a famous west-country Liberal dynasty, he rose as a crusading left-wing journalist in the late 1930s: 'The Guilty Men' (his book on the pre-war appeasers of Nazi Germany) is one of the great radical tracts of British history. He has been the voice of libertarian socialism in parliament, an international socialist and government minister, and was Labour leader for two-and-a-half years between 1980 and 1983. His political friendships with people like Beaverbrook, Cripps, Aneurin Bevan and Barbara Castle were passionate and profound, but he also had a remarkable and quite different career as a man of letters, with Dean Swift, Tom Paine, Hazlitt, Byron, Wordsworth, Heine, Wells and Silone amongst his heroes. Foot's two-volume life of Aneurin Bevan is a triumph of political biography. Kenneth Morgan's biography does full justice to both the public and the private side of Michael Foot - no more tellingly than his descriptions of Foot's long and happy marriage to the filmmaker, feminist and writer Jill Craigie.

The final curtain is closing on the Second World War, and Hana, a nurse, stays behind in an abandoned Italian villa to tend to her only remaining patient. Rescued by Bedouins from a burning plane, he is English, anonymous, damaged beyond recognition and haunted by his memories of passion and betrayal. The only clue Hana has to his past is the one thing he clung on to through the fire - a copy of The Histories by Herodotus, covered with hand-written notes describing a painful and ultimately tragic love affair. Mark Binelli: The Last Days of Detroit: Motor Cars, Motown and the Collapse of an Industrial Giant

The Last Days of Detroit: Motor Cars, Motown and the Collapse of an Industrial Giant

Description

By the end of the nineteenth century, Detroit, founded by the French as a fur-trading post, was thriving. In 1913 Henry Ford began mass-producing cars at his Model T plant, transforming the area into the Silicon Valley of its day. By 1920 it was the fourth largest city in America and by the mid-1950s General Motors had become the single biggest employer on earth. Here indeed was 'the most modern city in the world, the city of tomorrow'. But by the time Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1960 - thereby creating twentieth-century Detroit's other great assembly line - the cracks were already beginning to show: big industry was looking elsewhere for cheaper sites, cheaper labour and better tax breaks; urban planning was in meltdown; corruption was rife; racial tensions were running high. The 1967 riots - at the time the worst in US history - left 43 dead, more than 7,000 arrested and 3,000 buildings destroyed. Detroit, a former beacon of the capitalist dream, had degenerated into an urban wilderness where unemployment ran at 50 per cent. With more guns in the city than people, the murder rate was the highest in America - three times that of New York. Mark Binelli returned to live in his native Detroit after a break of many years. He tells the story of the boom and the bust - and of the new society to be found emerging from the debris: Detroit with its urban farms and vibrant arts scene; Detroit as a laboratory for the post-industrial, post-recession world. Here's what an iconic rust-belt city now looks like and how it might transform and regenerate itself in the twenty-first century.
